What is a one-day driving permit and when would you need one?

The one-day driving permit is intended for the vehicle owner, namely, the driver to get to the technical inspection station with a vehicle whose roadworthiness test permit has expired. The driver of the vehicle can receive the permit:

• in electronic form at e-CSDD;
• at any customer service centre of CSDD (Road Traffic Safety Directorate), where it can be received by an adult upon presentation of an identity document (passport/ID card, driving license or learner’s permit issued by CSDD).

The permit is issued to vehicles registered in Latvia and vehicles that have been removed from the register for sale in Latvia or that have been excluded from the Register of Vehicles and their Drivers if no state technical inspection or registration has been carried out for three years.

The permit gives the right to move with the specified vehicle from the repair shop or place where it is located to the nearest technical inspection station corresponding to the vehicle category. The permit to participate in road traffic is valid electronically and does not need to be printed. Police, customs or border guard officers can verify the existence of a permit online in the Register of Vehicles and their Drivers .

The permit can be issued also if the imposed fines have not been paid by their deadline specified in the Law on Administrative Liability or the vehicle has not been re-registered in a set manner. The permit can be received without paying the fee. In this case, the permit fee will be added to the other service charges, when the client pays before receiving them.

Does a one-day permit replace MTPL insurance?

The one-day driving permit does not cover the MTPL insurance . These two things are different and serve different purposes.

• A one-day driving permit is a temporary permit that allows the vehicle owner (driver) to move the vehicle from its repair shop or location to the nearest technical inspection station. It can be used if the roadworthiness test permit of the vehicle has expired but you want to take it for inspection. The permit can be obtained electronically or at any CSDD customer service centre.
• MTPL insurance is a mandatory vehicle insurance that will cover losses if a road traffic accident occurs. The MTPL insurance is required to participate in road traffic legally. It ensures indemnity for other road traffic parties and the vehicle owner in case he is at fault in an accident.

Is it possible to buy an MTPL policy for one day?

It is not possible to purchase an MTPL policy for one day or other short duration. However, given that the MTPL policy is mandatory for all motorised vehicles that participate in road traffic, the policy will have to be purchased for one month if the vehicle is deregistered, if it has not been inspected for more than 3 years or for standard periods (1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months) if the vehicle is registered in Latvia. Can I cancel the MTPL insurance policy, for example, if I sell the car?

The MTPL insurance policy can be terminated if the car is sold or any other reason for termination of the MTPL occurs according to the law. Sometimes there may be minor termination fees, up to 5% (administrative commission reserved by law). Here are some important points to consider:
