Repair after a car accident for ladies named Līga is more expensive than for gentlemen named Jānis

During Midsummer or Līgo public holidays the ratio of Līga and Jānis, who suffered a car accident, is proportionately approximately equal, considering the frequence of each name, however, repair of car accident consequences suffered by Līga is more costly. Over the past three years the average repair costs of a single Līga’s car or a compensation for damages to another vehicle amounted to 1031 Euro, while for Jānis – 891 Euro, according to BTA’s data.

In Latvia there are about 4.5 times more gentlemen named Jānis, than ladies named Līga, moreover, the last three years were marked by an almost equal difference between car accidents suffered by both name owners. There was only one exception, and that was in 2022, when Līga's were very disciplined, while Jānis's got themselves into trouble while driving much more often.

Gentlemen named Jānis suffered the most car accidents while driving VW and Toyota cars, which are at the top of Latvia’s most popular vehicle list, moreover, ladies named Līga also suffered the most accidents while driving a VW and Opel. And besides BTA’s statistics on all the company’s clients shows that during summer solstice VW drivers were definitely the least disciplined, although it may be explained by the large number of the German brand cars. Over the past three years Toyota, BMW, Audi and Volvo were next in Latvia’s most popular vehicle list.

Whereas repair of the consequences of losses incurred by themselves or caused to others appeared much more expensive for Līga, than for Jānis. In 2022, their average sum even amounted to 1632 Euro, while for gentlemen named Jānis it amounted to 828 Euro only. Last year the costs have levelled out. For the timeframe as of the 20th until the 30th of June gentlemen claimed car accidents resulting in vehicle repair at an average sum of 1469 Eur, while ladies - of 1239 Euro.

“A significant car repair invoice might become one of the worst presents on any driver’s name-day. Līga and Jānis, whose name-day falls on the popular seasonal festival, are no different. However, our experience shows that drivers that suffered a car accident during the festival season feel much better when they receive the insurer’s confirmation that car repair costs will be covered. And if CASCO insurance policy also envisages replacement car service, then the accident will only have a minimal effect on your day-today life,” that’s how BTA Insurance Claims Department director Kārlis Liepiņš recommends taking care of your peace of mind.

According to the data of the population register of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, there are over 45 thousand gentlemen named Jānis and almost 4.5 thousand ladies named Līga in Latvia.
